US policymakers and law enforcement officials have long argued that using any technology from Chinese tech companies, like Huawei and ZTE, may jeopardize national security.
The UN, however, is now pushing back at that notion, with the head of its internet and telecom agency reiterating persistent assertions from tech experts that there's no claim whatsoever to support the US claims.
Speaking to reporters in Geneva, Houlin Zhao, the secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), said that security concerns about 5G mobile networks built by Huawei appear to be driven by global geo-politics rather than any solid evidence.
According to Zhao, "Those preoccupations with Huawei’s equipment, up to now there is no proof so far ... I would encourage Huawei to be given equal opportunities to bid for business".
