After complaints from Android TV users about the sudden appearance of unwanted advertisements on their home-screens following a recent update, Google has officially admitted that it is testing ‘Sponsored Channels’ as part of the Android TV Core Services that ships with all Android TV devices.
According to multiple posts on social media sites and online message boards over the past several days, a wide range of Android TV devices seem to be affected by the so-called pilot program, including televisions from Sony, and devices like the Nvidia Shield and the Mi Box 3, among others.
In a statement to XDA, Google said, “Android TV is committed to optimizing and personalizing the entertainment experience at home. As we explore new opportunities to engage the user community, we’re running a pilot program to surface sponsored content on the Android TV home screen”.
